1) What is carbide?

A carbide is a chemical compound consist of carbon and metal like titanium, tungesten,calcium, etc. Carbides are formed at high temperature and exhibit high melting points.

2) What is the microstructure of metals?

The microstructure of metal can be characterized by the arrangement and number of certain lattice defects. Microstructure plays an important role in deciding the mechanical and physical properties of metals.

3) What are the effects of alloying elements on steel?

The effects of alloying elements on steel are that it generally increases its strength, hardness, hardenability, toughness, as well as creep resistance, and strength at elevated temperatures. Apart from this It improves its machinability and provides resistance to corrosion.

4) What type of corrosion occurs in sea water and in a steam boiler?

Galvanic corrosion occurs in seawater and Caustic corrosion, Acidic corrosion occurs in a steam boiler. This corrosion occurs due to oxidation, electrolytic dissolution, or acid attack.

5) What do you understand by metastable structure in metallurgy?

In metallurgy, metastable structures are the structures whose state doesn't change unless an external unbalanced force acts on it that is it provides the stability to the object.

6) At what temperature oxidation corrosion occur?

Oxidation corrosion occurs at high-temperature that's why it is also known as High-temperature corrosion. The temperature differs for different metals.

7) What is the difference between CCT and TTT curve?

TTT stands for time-temperature transformation diagrams examine the progress of transformation as a function of time, at a fixed temperature.

CCT stands for continuous cooling transformation diagrams examine the progress of transformation as a function of changing temperature.

8) What does Annealing temperature means?

The annealing temperature is the temperature at which a metal or alloy is heated to a temperature below its melting point in order to make it softer. This process is known as the Annealing process thus the temperature at which annealing occurs is known as the annealing temperature.

9) What is the formula to calculate the firing order of an engine?

There is no fixed formula to calculate the firing order of an engine as it has no fixed firing order.

10) What are Ceramics?

A ceramic is an inorganic non-metallic solid made by a mixture of clay, earthen elements, powders, and water. It is generally used to make pottery, bricks, tiles, cement, and glass as they are hard, corrosion-resistant, and brittle.

11) What are allotropes? What are the allotropes of Iron and Carbon?

Allotropes are the different forms of an element or an atom such that their physical and chemical properties differ from one another.

The allotropes of Iron are alpha iron (α-Fe), gamma iron (γ-Fe), and delta iron (δ-Fe)

The allotropes of Carbon are Amorphous Carbon Allotropes, Crystalline Carbon Allotropes.

12) What is the major difference between quenching and annealing?

In the annealing process, the hardness of the metal is reduced to improve the cutting performance and the structure remains the same, it basically eliminates the internal stress of the metal.

In quenching the metal is heated to a temperature above the critical point. The main purpose of quenching to obtain martensite due to its quick cooling property.

13) What is vacuum induction melting?

Vacuum induction melting (VIM) is used to melt metal within a vacuum by using electric currents.

14) What is powder metallurgy?

Powder metallurgy is recognized as green technology as with this method the metal is formed by heating compacted metal powders to just below their melting points.

15) What is the melting point of brass?

1710°F or 930°C is the melting point of brass.

16) Which plaster is used in gold investment casting?

Gypsum-bonded investment is used in gold investment casting.

17) Which liquid can dissolve gold?

Aqua Regia is also known as royal water can dissolve gold.

18) What is a SPCC material?

SPCC steel is a commercial quality cold rolled steel that is commercially used as mild steel.SPCC is a material grade and designation defined in JIS G 3141 standard.

19) What is the atomic density of ceramics?

The atomic density of ceramics lies in the range of 2-6 gms/cm3.

20) Why in liquid carburizing mixture of salts is preferred than single salt?

In liquid carburizing, a mixture of salts is more preferred than single salt because liquid carburizing involves faster heat up.
